Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has been campaigning against the rising prices of prescription drugs in the U.S. The billionaire has finally decided to take matter into his own hands.
The Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs Company (MCCPDC) had its launch Thursday (January 20). This online pharmacy will begin offering more than 100 generic drugs at affordable prices.
According to the official statement, MCCPDC will purchase drugs directly from manufacturers in an effort to bypass intermediaries and provide over 100 prescription drugs at affordable rates.
Examples include the leukemia drug imatinib, which is listed at $47 a month on the online wholesaler compared to the exorbitant $9,657 retail price. The online pharmacy’s prices for generics factor in a 15% margin on top of actual manufacturer prices and a $3 pharmacist fee, the statement said.
The online store doesn’t take insurance claims into account. That means customers will have to bear the cost out of their pockets. Moreover, the store will require a new prescription every time a customer places an order on the website.
