Joni Mitchell has received numerous honors, including nine Grammy nominations and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. The singer is well-known, having been dubbed “one of the greatest songwriters of all time” by Rolling Stone. Mitchell recently announced her intention to remove her music from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young.
On Wednesday, Spotify announced that it had begun removing the singer’s music from its streaming service. It began two days after Neil briefly posted a public letter requesting that Spotify choose between him and Joe Rogan. The popular podcaster has been accused of spreading false information about the coronavirus and vaccines.
Joni Mitchell has announced that she will remove her music from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young’s decision to do the same earlier this week. Pitchfork has reached out to Spotify for comment.
Young’s challenge to Spotify has become a high-profile, albeit unexpected, flashpoint in the battle over online misinformation and free speech. It also called into question the ability of performing artists to control where their work is heard.
The singer-songwriter released a statement on her website on Friday, January 28.
“I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”
Young had requested that his work be removed earlier this week, citing Spotify’s role in “spreading fake information about vaccines” by hosting Joe Rogan‘s podcast. On Wednesday, the platform fulfilled Young’s request.
Neil Young stood firm in his beliefs, and as a result, he has earned the respect of his fans and other artists.
