Janet Jackson has nightmares from her 2004 Super Bowl performance. The star was shunned and deemed a social and professional pariah after her wardrobe malfunction. She faced huge public backlash with Justin Timberlake coming out unscathed from the incident. Despite this, it appears the pair remain good friends to this day.
The legendary singer discussed the incident for Lifetime and A&E’s new documentary, Janet. She explained in the documentary, “Honestly, this whole thing was blown way out of proportion.” She added, it was an accident that should not have happened and insisted that, “everyone is looking for someone to blame and that’s got to stop.”
Janet also revealed that Justin and her remain good friends years after the Super Bowl incident. She said, “Justin and I are very good friends, and we will always be very good friends,” She added, “We spoke just a few days ago. He and I have moved on, and it’s time for everyone else to do the same.”
Jackson further said that she told Timberlake that he shouldn’t make a statement at the time with the hope that she could keep him away from the drama and the subsequent backlash. However, her efforts to shield him were in vain as Timberlake faced criticism for years since the performance during which he accidentally exposed Jackson’s breast.
“We talked once and [Justin] said, ‘I don’t know if I should come out and make a statement, And I said, ‘Listen, I don’t want any drama for you. They’re aiming all of this at me.’ So I said, ‘If I were you, I wouldn’t say anything.'”
Meanwhile, Timberlake released a public statement on social media apologizing to Jackson for his handling of the incident in February of 2021. His Instagram statement also included an apology to his former lover Britney Spears.
