The Oscar nominees for 2022 have been announced, but one person absent from the best actress contest is causing the most buzz online. Lady Gaga’s performance in “House of Gucci” did not receive a nomination, which surprised fans. The nomination would’ve been Gaga’s second best actress nomination, following her Oscar-winning performance in “A Star Is Born.”
Jessica Chastain for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Olivia Colman for “The Lost Daughter,” Penélope Cruz for “Parallel Mothers,” Nicole Kidman for “Being the Ricardos,” and Kristen Stewart for “Spencer” are this year’s Oscar candidates for best actress.
After receiving nominations for lead actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and BAFTA Film Awards, Gaga was considered a contender for an Oscar nomination this year. These four awards shows are the most important predecessors to the Academy Awards, so it’s surprising Lady Gaga received nominations for all four and still didn’t win.
The New York Film Critics Circle also nominated Gaga best actress. Following her failure to make the cut at the SAG Awards and the BAFTA Film Awards, many experts predicted Stewart would be the one to miss out on an Oscar nomination.
“House of Gucci” had a bad morning all around, missing out on top awards for best picture and best director. Despite SAG Award and Critics Choice nods, Gaga’s co-star Jared Leto was similarly overlooked in the supporting actor category.
In total, “House of Gucci” has received only one Academy Award nomination for cosmetics and hairstyling this year. The hairstylist for Lady Gaga in “House of Gucci,” Frederic Aspiras, is the second Asian American to be nominated in the hair and makeup category.
Gaga’s Oscar snub comes after months of pushing for the part by the actress and pop music diva. Gaga’s press tour for “House of Gucci” was a frenzy, and she made headlines for her Method acting tactics, which included speaking in an Italian accent for nine months during pre-production and filming, and having a psychiatric nurse on set to keep an eye on her.
Take a look below to see how people reacted to Lady Gaga’s Oscar snub. The Oscar winners will be announced on March 27 at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.
