Last year, Alec Baldwin was confirmed to be the person who fired the prop gun that killed a female crew member, revealed to be the cinematographer. It took place on the sets of Baldwin’s upcoming western film, Rust.
According to TMZ, the key medic on Rust has filed a lawsuit against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed and Dave Halls, blaming them for the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins.
Cherlyn Schaefer filed suit against the movie’s armorer and assistant director as well as the production company among others. It was claimed that the defendants’ alleged negligence caused her severe emotional distress in the aftermath of the tragic incident.
As revealed by legal documentation, Schaefer claimed she was the first person to give medical assistance to Halyna after the shooting. Schaefer tried her best to save her by applying pressure to her wounds, giving her oxygen and checking her vitals.
Schaefer further claimed she was the one who called 911 and ordered a medical helicopter to airlift Halyna to the hospital. The medic added that she suffered “tremendous shock, trauma and severe emotional distress,” laying the blame on the production’s shortcomings related to safety issues.
The medic added that she is so shaken by the tragic incident that she is medically prevented from returning to the profession or any other job. Schaefer’s suing Reed and Halls because she claimed they were responsible for giving Alec Baldwin the prop gun with a live round.
Schaefer is asking for unspecified damages. The Rock also previously stated that he will no longer use real guns on sets of his films after the tragic incident concerning Alec Baldwin. We certainly hope such a tragedy never happens again.
