The legendary west-coast rapper turned mogul keeps making headlines for his ventures into business. Snoop initially joined Death Row in 1993 after Dr. Dre discovered him in the early 1990s.
Death Row was where Snoop dropped his debut album Doggystyle, which went on to earn recognition from many music critics as one of the most significant albums of the 1990s, as well as one of the most influential hip-hop albums ever released. The label, without a doubt, has been home to many iconic names in Hip-Hop.
MNRK Music Group, which is controlled by private equity funds managed by leading global investment firm Blackstone owned Death Row Records until today when Snoop Dogg announced that he has acquired the brand.
This transaction might end up Snoop beginning to acquire music rights from the label as well, a source close to Variety told them.
Now owner of Death Row Records, Snoop Dogg said:
“I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value. It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me. I would like to personally thank the teams at Blackstone, MNRK and especially David Kestnbaum, who worked collaboratively with me over several months to make this exciting homecoming a reality. I’m looking forward to building the next chapter of Death Row Records.”
50-year-old west coast legend is going to be leading the brand for coming years, Business Wire reported. Chris Taylor, MNRK Music Group’s, President & CEO said:
“Snoop is clearly the executive to take Death Row into its next 30 years. MNRK has been honored to oversee this legendary brand over the last decade and enjoyed introducing it to millions of new fans in 2021 through our award-winning 30th anniversary marketing campaign.”
The news of this massive deal comes in trail of his upcoming album B.O.D.R, releasing 11 February 2022 from the same label.
