Katy Perry has had her share of professional rivalries. Taylor Swift even wrote a song about it. “Bad Blood” was written in response to Perry stealing singers from Swift’s touring group to use on her own shows. The two have since patched things up and become friends again.
Stevie Nicks is one of rock and roll’s most seasoned veterans. The Fleetwood Mac star knows all too well what a distraction professional rivalries and show business gossip can be. Stevie goes out of her way to avoid them.
Nicks was profiled in The New Yorker recently. In the piece, she discussed a talk she had with Katy Perry in 2012. Stevie advised Katy to worry about her career and stay away from personal feuds.
“She said, ‘So Stevie, who are your rivals?’ And I said, ‘I don’t have rivals.’ And her big blue eyes got bigger and bluer,” the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer said. “And I said, ‘No Katy, I don’t, and neither do you. You are Katy Perry, you’re who you are, you do what you do and you’re great at it. I’m Stevie Nicks, I do what I do and I’m great at it. We don’t have rivals. That’s just ridiculous.’
She said, ‘Well, there’s like, the Taylor Swift army and there’s like, the Katy army and there’s like —’ And I was like, ‘That’s just bullsh*t. You have to just walk away from that. Don’t carry that around in your mind because then they’re winning the game.’ “
Katy Perry must’ve taken Stevie Nicks’ advice to heart. Things have been patched up with Taylor Swift, and Perry has even appeared in a music video with Taylor. With age and experience comes wisdom. Stevie Nicks is more than willing to share.
