R.Kelly has decided to part ways with his original Chicago legal team and instead hire Bill Cosby’s lawyer. Jennifer Bonjean, Cosby’s attorney, was successful in appealing the actor’s sexual assault conviction in 2018, and Kelly is hoping for the same in his sexual abuse case.
Kelly indicated he wanted Jennifer Bonjean to represent him in the Chicago chase, which is set for a jury trial in August, during a phone call Wednesday morning. For his racketeering conviction in New York last year, the singer is currently awaiting punishment in Brooklyn. In a recent tweet, Bonjean acknowledged their legal partnership.
Just filed an appearance in Mr. Kelly’s case pending in the Northern District of Illinois. His trial date is set for August 1, 2022.
Kelly was expected to appear in court two weeks ago, but according to Rolling Stone, he contracted COVID-19 in his detention cell. Bonjean was given a two-week extension due to illness, allowing him to review the essential papers.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Kelly was found guilty of 12 crimes, including engaging in sexual intercourse with a juvenile and bribing a police officer to get a fake ID for a 15-year-old singer. He is currently facing a ten-year mandatory minimum sentence.
In late September of last year, the disgraced musician was convicted guilty of sexual abuse allegations. Women accused him of sexual abuse dating back to the early 1990s. According to the New York Times, after his conviction in New York, he faced charges in a few other states, including federal child pornography and obstruction counts in Chicago.
