Aretha Franklin’s iconic legacy is living on through her granddaughter. Grace Franklin, showcased her musical talents when she auditioned for American Idol during Sunday’s episode. Sadly, she didn’t get through despite Katy Perry being on her favor,
This might be one of the biggest audition shockers in American Idol history. Grace Franklin stood before the judges and revealed that she is the granddaughter of Aretha Franklin. The 15 year old paid tribute to her grandmother, the late Queen of Soul.
Grace performed Aretha’s classic “Ain’t No Way” and the Lauryn Hill version of “Killing Me Softly.” Initially, Grace attempted a rendition of “Killing Me Softly” that judge Luke Bryan called “a little sleepy.” Later, Katy Perry asked Franklin if she had anything else she could sing.
Richie and Bryan voted “no” after listening to Grace perform the songs. Perry gave Grace a “yes,” adding that the high school student from Detroit, Michigan had “stardust” and “sparkle” on her.
Lionel Richie, who knew Aretha Franklin, was overjoyed to share stories with the teen before her performance. He later called himself “Uncle Richie” and offered advice. Richie told her to put more time and work into practicing.
