Stephen A. Smith has a new playmate on the daily sports gabfest “First Take.” Chris “Mad Dog” Russo recently joined the show. Both talking heads have a long history of being loud, assertive, and self-assured in their opinions on the world of sports.
On today’s show, Smith and Russo were debating whether Steph Curry is a top ten NBA player of all time. They disagreed, but the conversation remained somewhat normal. Once Russo started rattling off names that he thought were better than Steph, things got out of control.
Rather than offering stats, insight, and reason, the lowest common denominator prevailed. It is exactly the kind of television the producers signed up for when they put this volatile pair together. Meet the new First Take, same as the old First Take.
Stephen A. and Mad Dog screamed at each other for the better part of a full two minutes. Most of the “discussion” was barely intelligible. Plenty of viewers probably tuned out after the headache started.
Smith and Russo don’t appear to have any personal animosity. Their styles simply clash. They’re the type of television presenters who love to be the loudest.
We will have to wait and see how long Stephen A. Smith and Mad Dog Russo remain together. This part of today’s show was nearly unwatchable. Neither could get a word in edgewise. For those who need some help staying awake during the hours that it airs, First Take is the perfect solution.
