Donald Glover is an incredibly talented individual. While he already has a successful music career as artist Childish Gambino, he’s been part of series such as Atlanta and Community, which have developed a huge fan following throughout time.
Glover is now confessing that Awaken, My Love! was born out of pettiness. It remains one of his most celebrated ventures, earning him several Grammy Award nominations and one win.
The Childish Gambino hitmaker is an elusive figure in the music industry. He recently sat down for an interview with The Shop. There he talked about his third studio album and how it came to be.
Did you ever tap into something that you feel is kinda bad to, like…it’s in you to win. Because I struggle with that. I am naturally, like, petty. Like, extremely petty. Awaken, My Love! was literally because somebody was like, ‘Oh, he can’t make a hit.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, not only will I make a hit, I won’t make a video for it.’ It makes you stronger, but I also know it’s dark. It’s not something that you should be…it’s not something that it should be [what motivates you], ’cause it’s bad.
It’s unclear whether this was a specific person who tried to stifle Glover’s skills or a general reaction from music lovers. Either way, it inspired him to create an extraordinary piece of work that included his fan favorite, Redbone. Awaken, My Love! is worth revisiting. as well as a clip from The Shop, which you can see below.
