Death Jam records was recently bought by Snoop Dogg, but some of the label’s most treasured additions were not included in the sale. That can change, and Snoop is confident about it.
Snoop Dogg says, “I’m pretty sure we’re going to be able to work something out,” since he’s now in charge of Death Row Records.
Snoop Dogg has a clear vision for Death Row Records and he is pretty confident he’ll be able to “work something out” with 2Pac’s estate. Snoop Dogg has already made some major moves starting off with the deal with Def Jam Records in 2021 and very recently he took control over Death Row Records. 30 years ago, he made his rapping debut on the label, and now he’s CEO.
There’s been some confusion about the ownership of the label since Billboard reported last month that Death Row Records didn’t include Dr. Dre’s The Chronic or any of Tupac’s albums under Death Row.
In a recent conversation with Elliott Wilson for TIDAL, Snoop Dogg revealed what his new ownership of the label means. He shared that he is currently managing “the masters to the publishing, to the IP, to the label, to the logo, to everything.”
“As far as 2Pac’s masters, 2Pac’s masters came back to him last year. But I got a great relationship with his estate, and I’m pretty sure we’re going to be able to work something out … to continue some Death Row 2Pac business now that Snoop Dogg is in control of Death Row,” he said. “Same with Dr. Dre and The Chronic. I got The Chronic album. I got Doggystyle, Tha Doggfather, Murder Was the Case, Dogg Food, Above the Rim. I got all those records.”
His plans are to bring the iconic Death Row Records to a global market through his networks in the music industry. Snoop said that he can bring the record label to EDM and Latin markets, which according to him are striving right now.
“These genres are gigantic. So to be able to take Death Row music into those types of collaborations, it’s interesting. I may explore that,” Snoop said. “International vibes. And I know what Death Row means to the globe.”
