Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine without provocation recently. The aggression sparked worldwide outrage and condemnation of the dictator. Several American and European companies announced that they will halt business ties with Russia in the wake of the war.

Apple is one of the largest companies to do so. The iPhone maker completely stopped all sales to Russia while Putin continues to shell Ukrainian cities. The company has also made some other changes.

A Twitter post by Bill Browder pointed out that Crimea is now listed on Apple Maps as part of Ukraine. Putin infamously annexed the region to Russia in 2014. Now that Apple doesn’t have to deal with Russia, they have made the symbolic change.

“This is really funny. Now that Apple has left Russia, Apple Maps has put Crimea back in Ukraine”

The world has started treating Vladimir Putin like the despot he is. Heavy international sanctions are bankrupting the dictator and his country. The consequences were not what Putin had expected.

The change to Apple Maps will not have much effect on the ongoing war. It is a clear sign that the company means business when it comes to delegitimizing Putin. When it comes to demoralizing a ruthless dictatorship, every moral victory counts.
