Brittney Griner is being held in a Russian prison after the WNBA star was allegedly caught with a hash oil vape pen. The detainment has been devastating for Brittney’s family. Griner plays in Russia during the WNBA offseason. As Vladimir Putin continues his unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, it is a sketchy time for any American in Russia.
Trevor Reed is a retired Marine from Texas. Reed has also been locked up in Russia. Trevor has been inside his Russian cell since 2019.
A representative for Reed told TMZ that he doesn’t think Russia’s allegations against Brittney Griner pass the smell test. Trevor has seen Russians fabricate criminal charges before his own eyes. Jonathan Franks said he thinks the claim could be bogus.
The representative said he is almost sure that Brittney Griner didn’t even have a cannabis product on her at the time. Franks used Trevor Reed’s case as an example. Reed was convicted in July of 2020 and sentenced to 9 years in a Russian prison for “endangering the life and health of Russian police officers” during an incident in Moscow.
The United States ambassador to Russia says the crime never happened. John Sullivan called the case “theater of the absurd.” Trevors family is hoping that Brittney’s situation brings attention to other perceived injustices being done against American citizens in Russia.
Senator Lindsey Graham and the State Department both have said that the US is doing what they can to secure Brittney Griner’s release. Trevor Reed and others like him could also use a little help. Time will tell if the American government will be able to swing some sort of deal for their safe release.
