Penguin is one of the most feared and beloved DC characters, having been played by Burgess Meredith, Wayne Knight, and Danny DeVito, among others. Colin Farrell also joined their ranks after being cast as Oswald Cobblepot, popularly known as Penguin, It seems like Colin Farrell is going to be attached to “The Batman” universe for quite some time.
A spin-off series has been ordered amid the hype surrounding The Batman. The news of a spin-off based on Batman comics villain Penguin has been circulating since Fall 2019, but Variety verified this week that HBO Max had ordered the limited series.
According to reports, the series would follow the villain’s ascension through the ranks of Gotham’s criminal underworld. The show’s writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc said that he is excited to continue the world that Matt Reeves has created.
The world that Matt Reeves created for ‘The Batman’ is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot. I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.
I have long been a fan of the world of ‘The Batman,’ and Matt’s film is such a powerful and bold entry into the canon. I am excited and humbled to continue telling stories in the grimy world of Gotham City – and what better excuse to channel my inner villain than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot? I am thrilled to work with Colin, Matt, Dylan, 6th & Idaho, Warners, and HBO Max as we work to bring this story to the screen.
Meanwhile, just one week after its premiere, The Batman has amassed a worldwide gross of $250 million. The newest in a long line of Batman-related films has not only been well received by audiences, but also by critics.
