Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida brushed off criticism from the CEO of Disney, Bob Chapek over state legislation that restricts conversations on LGBTQ topics in schools and called the company “woke.” Now he is trending in a big way thanks to that. Obviously, the internet is paying attention to what the controversial politician has to say.
Just this week, Florida’s legislature passed a measure as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill which limits discussions over sexual orientation or gender identity between teachers and students. That trended for its own reasons.
According to the legislature, such discussions are “not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.” It is also said that those discussions should be banned among teachers from all grades. The legislation now only requires a signature of DeSantis to pass the bill.
There have been objections to this bill ever since and critics are arguing that it targets LGBTQ youth and is dangerous. On the other hand, supporters believe that it gives parents more of a say in what their children are taught in classrooms.
Chapek, who has sought to refrain from engaging in the politics of the bill, said that he had spoken to DeSantis and expressed, “our disappointment and concern that if the legislation becomes law, it could be used to unfairly target gay, lesbian, nonbinary, and transgender kids and families.”
According to a video obtained by Fox News, DeSantis fired back at Disney by calling the company “woke” and saying that “when you have companies that have made a fortune off being family-friendly and catering to families and young kids, they should understand that parents of young kids do not want this injected into their kids’ kindergarten classroom.”
DeSantis also claimed that Disney is profiting from relationships with China. It was said that, “they don’t say a word about the really brutal practices that you see over there at the hands of the [Chinese Communist Party].”
The legislation of Florida signaled again that DeSantis is likely to support the legislation. Check out these tweets to see what people have been talking about.
