Star Wars fans are upset today after news broke that one of the series’ most infamous villains has been cut from an upcoming series. Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to debut on May 25 on Disney+. The series will not include Darth Maul as originally planned.

Ewan McGregor will make his return to the iconic role. Darth Maul was one of his main enemies in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. A combination of menacing face paint and an awesome dual lightsaber made him a fan favorite from an otherwise unpopular entry in the legendary series.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the change was made for creative reasons. Other antagonists such as Darth Vader were added instead of Maul. The show’s difficult production schedule led to a lot of changes.

In early 2020, Lucasfilm was reportedly unhappy with the scripts for the series. Pre-production was paused at that time. The COVID-19 pandemic hit and things got even worse.

A young Luke Skywalker was also supposed to be included but ended up on the cutting room floor. Producers waffled on whether Darth Maul would be on the show as well. Ultimately, Ray Park never showed up to the set at all.

Disney and Lucasfilm have high hopes for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The Mandalorian has been a massive success both creatively and critically. We will have to wait and see how the notoriously picky Star Wars fan base receives the latest entry in the Star Wars galaxy.
