Melinda Gates Says Separating From Bill Gates Was The Lowest Moment Of Her Life

Melinda and Bill Gates announced their split almost a year ago. After a year filled with healing from heartbreak, Melinda Gates has now opened up about how difficult it was to decide that they had to separate from each other.

The philanthropist was announced the Women of the Year earlier this month. In a conversation with USA Today, Melinda Gates talked about how “We all have low moments” in life.  

We all have low moments. I’m not happy every day. You turn on the news and you think, ‘Oh my, gosh, what’s going to happen next?’ I would say probably, though, for sure, my lowest moment in life was when I finally reached the decision that I knew I needed to leave my marriage.

Melinda Gates tied the knot with the Microsoft founder in January, 1994. After 27 long years of marriage, they share 3 children: Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe. The Moment of Lift author revealed that she wasn’t happy after so many years, and she was shocked when she first realized that.

That wasn’t something I ever thought would happen to me. It certainly wasn’t what I thought on the day I got married, but I realized for myself, I needed to make a healthier choice, and that was just a very, very sad day.

Melinda & Bill Gates announced their separation back in May 2021. While they had chosen to split, they still work together in their joint ventures, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage. Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.

The news of the split between the two coincided with a report by Wall Street Journal that alleged Bill Gates of having an affair with a Microsoft employee back in the year 2000. An investigation on the matter was launched after the details regarding the affair started circulating in 2019.
