Jussie Smollett’s time in prison has stirred up a lot of controversy. The former “Empire” star was sentenced to 150 days in jail for faking a hate crime against himself. It appears his time behind bars was cut short.
TMZ reports, Jussie just walked out of jail in Chicago. There was a media circus on Wednesday outside the Cook County Jail, with dozens of reporters waiting for Jussie to be released from custody. The star was escorted out by a bunch of security guards into a waiting SUV.
Jussie’s legal team rallied against the judge who sentenced him to jail time. They claimed the prison sentence was unconstitutional and draconian. They also shared some insights on what nearly a week in jail was like for Jussie.
Attorneys of the actor said, when they were talking to him at one point through a glass barrier it looked like Jussie had given up and lost hope in the constitution. One of Jussie’s attorneys, Tina Glandian told the outlet,
“We are gratified that Jussie will be back with his family and loved ones and look forward to a dispassionate review and reversal of the serial injustices visited upon him.”
The appeals court ordered Jussie’s release during the appeal process. He is being released from jail on his own recognizance, but if he misses any future hearings it’ll cost him $150,000. Fans are certainly happy to see their beloved star getting out.
