Kathy Griffin has spent a lot of her time battling recently. The controversial comedian recently announced that she had beaten cancer after being diagnosed last August. Kathy also fought addiction before the cancer situation ever even popped up.
The 61-year-old star had a difficult time overcoming an addiction to pills. Griffin thought the fact that she got hooked in her late 50s was almost funny. Kathy was depressed after losing a ton of work after posing with a model of Donald Trump’s decapitated head.
In an interview with the New York Times’ Sway podcast on Thursday, Kathy talked about her dark time. After essentially being canceled, Kathy was overcome so overcome with the lack of purpose in her life that she began abusing drugs and alcohol. Griffin even attempted suicide.
“Well, look, I think that I’m probably an addictive person, you know. But you have to admit, it’s almost comical. I went in the hospital for pill addiction at 59 years old. Who the hell becomes a junkie in their late 50s? Me…
I didn’t know what to do with myself. I was just such a crazy workaholic, and all of a sudden, I had this time on my hands, and then I was depressed, and things just weren’t looking up.”
Kathy Griffin was able to turn her life around when she married marketing executive Randy Bick in late 2020. Since then, she has beaten the addiction and overcome lung cancer. Kathy’s humor might not be for everyone, but you have to admire her tenacity.
