Mental health is a very concerning topic among men as they are usually expected to suppress their feelings. Dwayne Johnson recently opened up about the mental health issues that he repressed for a long time.
The Rock recently got candid about the pressure he had been under for most of his life. He talked about how he felt he had to be a man and thus not be vulnerable by sharing about mental health with others.
In an interview with E! News, Johnson spoke about how he learned the importance of opening up to others over time. He shared that he learned so after years of struggling with depression as a young man.
“I grew up an only child and a dude. And you know, it’s not in our nature to just talk about it because it makes us feel vulnerable,” Johnson said
“We don’t want to feel vulnerable. It makes us feel weak, we shouldn’t feel weak. We should have our sh*t together. But that’s not life.”
Johnson said he felt helpless when the first time he experienced depression back in in college in the 1990s. All the pressure to be a man had him sorted out his issues quietly. But since then, he has come a long way.
The Great One is actively committed to supporting mental health battles, he reaffirmed in the interview. His NBC series, Young Rock, which is inspired by his life shows his mental health struggles he experienced an an young man.
