Memphis hometown hero and NBA star, Lorenzen Wright was brutally murdered in 2010. Lorenzen Wright’s fans and family finally got some justice on Monday. After more than a decade of legal battle, Wright’s killer is found guilty.
TMZ Sports reports Billy Ray Turner was convicted of murdering the former NBA player. He was sentenced to life in prison. Now, the Shelby County jury has found the 51-year-old guilty in the shooting death of Lorenzen Wright.
Turner faced the following charges from the original indictment: first-degree murder, attempted First-degree murder, and conspiracy. He was found guilty on all charges. The jury returned a unanimous decision on all three counts after deliberating for less than three hours on Monday.
Prosecutors alleged that Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright, hired two other people, including Turner, to commit the murder. She lured Wright to the field under the guise they were there to meet someone who owed his ex money. Sherra previously plead guilty to facilitation of murder as well as facilitation to commit first-degree murder.
As a result, she was sentenced to 30 years in prison in July 2019. However, she will be eligible for parole after only 9 years. Lorenzen Wright played 13 seasons in the NBA for Los Angeles Clippers, Atlanta Hawks, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Widespread coverage of his disappearance, as well as his status as a popular Memphis figure, led to the prosecution of his murder being among the most publicized in Memphis history.
RIP Lorenzen Wright.
