Netflix’s upcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic received a rare rating on the streaming giant. The biographical drama film, Blonde, is adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name. As the film’s title suggests, it is based on the life of actress/sex symbol Marilyn Monroe. As the rating indicates, there will be loads of skin.
The biopic stars Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe and is directed by Andrew Dominik. Motion Picture Association on Wednesday gave it the rare NC-17 adults-only rating for “some sexual content.” It is said that the director predicted that the film would get said rating from the beginning.
Back in February, the Blonde director opened up about his prediction to Screen Daily and talked about the reactions his project might get.
“It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the f*cking audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office. It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.”
The director also revealed that Netflix insisted him to hire Tenet’s editor, Jennifer Lame, “to curb the excesses of the movie.” One of those “excesses” includes a rape scene that was also in the source novel. Dominik expressed his gratitude towards Netflix for supporting his project.
“It’s much easier to support stuff when you like it. It’s much harder when you don’t. I have nothing but gratitude for Netflix.”
Netflix has streamed NC-17 rated movies produced by other studios, for instance, 2013’s Blue is the Warmest Color. That being said, Blonde will be the first movie produced by the streaming giant to receive the hardcore rating.
