Questlove has taken the word “mistake” to a whole new level. The director of Oscar nominated Summer of Soul shares one of his most surprising amid the doc’s stellar run. During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter he recalled the amusing moment.
Questlove was simply waiting for his food to arrive when he received a call from a former U.S. president. Barack Obama called to congratulate him on his Summer of Soul documentary winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival. However, he ended up getting him confused with a Postmates delivery driver.
When his phone was lighting up, he barely checked the number before answering.
“The phone rings and I’m wondering where my Postmates guy is with my food. So the caller is like ‘Hello?’ and I was like ‘Yo, come to this floor, I’ve been waiting for you.’ He’s like ‘Huh? Wait’. I said ‘Postmates?’ ‘This is Barry. Wait, do you think I’m your Postmates?’ and I was like, ‘Huh?’”.
A quick look at his messages revealed he was given a number of heads-ups about Barack Obama hitting his line.
“I looked on my phone and there’s all these texts saying ‘The president’s going to call’. “I totally missed that. I had a belly laugh”.
During the same Questlove conversation on the blue carpet at the recent Spirit Awards the multihyphenate also shared dish on another surprise encounter.
“Last night I went to one of my favorite hole-in-the-wall sushi spots and one by one, each member of the cast of Euphoria walked in. I was like Yo! I was doing my best to not freak out. After a while, Dominic Fike turned around. He’s a musician I really respect, so I kind of eased my way over to the cool kid’s table for half a second”.
No, Obama is not driving for Postmates, but he would probably excel in the job and make a ton of tips.
Questlove previously DJ’ed at the White House in 2016 when Barack Obama was still president. Speaking to Rick Rubin on his Broken Record podcast in 2019 he revealed Obama requested French Montana’s “Pop That” to liven up the party.
