Michael Che is a multi-talented American stand-up comedian, actor, and writer. Michael is best known for his work on Saturday Night Live, where he co-anchors Weekend Update and is a co-head writer alongside Colin Jost. Che recently announced his departure from the SNL anchor desk.
Michael Che performed at Steller Hair Co. in Minneapolis on Friday night. Michael announced his departure from the anchor desk of Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update.” For eight years, the show’s co-head writer shared an anchor desk with Colin Jost.
“This is my last year,” Che said between jokes during a pop-up show at a Minneapolis hair salon. “You know my tie is a clip-on, right? What man wears a clip-on tie to work for eight years — that’s embarrassing.”
He did not elaborate on when and why he is leaving. In January, he surpassed Seth Meyers as the host with the most appearances on “Update.” Only Jost has a larger collection.
According to Star Tribune, During the Steller Hair Co. pop-up event, Che was provocative. He made it clear in his adult-themed show that he did not want to discuss the news. Che also wanted to know, “Is it Ukraine or the Ukraine? Is this what this war is about?” In his 40-minute set, the native New Yorker referenced growing up in the projects and was self-deprecating, with expletives and sexual references.
“Did you guys think I was gonna talk about the news? I don’t really do jokes. If I had jokes, I would’ve like, booked a theater. I’m in a beauty shop.”
Che has branched out from “SNL.” In 2021, he appeared in the HBO Max series “That Damn Michael Che” as well as the Netflix comedy special “Michael Che: Shame the Devil.” We will have to see if he really leaves the Weekend Update anchor desk, but that position has a long history of losing iconic hosts.
