Chris Rock’s joke aimed at Jada Pinkett Smith generated a wave of controversy. It appears the comedian may have landed himself in some serious trouble with Oscar bosses as his joke was reportedly unvetted before the live show.
The 57-year old was slapped in the face by Jada’s husband, Will Smith, after he stormed the stage in a fit of rage when Chris jokingly compared her haircut to G.I. Jane. A source told Us Weekly that Chris initially rehearsed his speech with no mention of Jada. The insider added, ‘Will was not in attendance for [the] rehearsal.’
While on stage, Chris said, ‘Jada, GI Jane 2, I can’t wait to see it’, which prompted Will to step on stage and slap him before he shouted, ‘Keep my wife’s name out your f******g mouth’. Jada has been open about her struggle with hair loss due to alopecia.
In December she posted a video where she pointed out a patch of baldness. She said in the Instagram clip, ‘Now at this point, I can only laugh. Y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia and just all of a sudden one day, look at this line right here,’
‘Now this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide, so I thought I’d just share it so y’all not asking any questions — but you know, mama’s going to put some rhinestones in there, and I’m going to make me a little crown.’
Meanwhile, the exchange between Smith & Rock was muted on a delayed telecast in much of the US, but was aired in full to some international audiences. You can check out the uncensored version below.
