Will Smith slapped the taste out of Chris Rock’s mouth for speaking on Jada’s baldness. Then the Fresh Prince won an Oscar later on in the night. There could be an issue with him keeping that award.
Chris Rock decided not to file a police report with the Los Angeles Police Department after Will Smith slapped him on live television, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences could step in. The Academy, according to the New York Post, has a stringent regulation prohibiting any type of violence, and Smith’s actions could result in him losing his first Oscar.
“It’s basically assault. Everyone was just so shocked in the room, it was so uncomfortable. I think Will would not want to give his Oscar back, but who knows what will happen now.”
Soon after hassling the famous comic onstage, Smith received an Oscar for his depiction of Richard Williams in King Richard in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category. With all eyes on him, he couldn’t help but comment on what had just happened on stage.
“I want to apologize to the Academy, I wanna apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people … art imitates life. I look like the crazy father. Love will make you do crazy things.”
He also linked himself to Williams, claiming that they were both “fierce defenders” of their own families. He added, “And I know to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse, you gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you gotta have people disrespecting you and you gotta smile and you gotta pretend that it’s OK.” However, despite the appearances, Diddy claims that the two Hollywood superstars quickly patched things up.
Odds are the Academy won’t take away Will Smith’s Oscar, but the point is that they could if they wanted to. In the meantime, Chris Rock probably has more material now.
