Will Smith was the last person anyone expected to slap Chris Rock on public television. After comedian Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, the actor got out of his seat and slapped the comedian with an open palm slap during the Oscars.
Rock managed to finish the rest of his presenting responsibilities, despite being visibly shaken by Will Smith’s on-stage smack. Dame Dash recently spoke with Page Six and revealed that he was originally taken aback by Smith’s physical altercation with Chris Rock.
I will tell you this — ten years ago, five years ago, one year ago, if I ever heard that Will Smith got up and smacked somebody I would not believe it. It’s almost like when a superhero turns into a villain or when a wrestler goes from being a good guy to the bad guy. It is almost seen as the shift of Will Smith. It is like he’s sick of being a good guy I guess. Will is tired of being a punk and he exploded and Chris Rock got it. It’s also internalizing a lot of trauma that he didn’t recognize and he overreacted to other things that bothered him. So more than likely I could say he could use a little therapy because he lost control of his emotions.
Dash speculated that the episode could be interpreted as a change in Will Smith after decades of keeping a family-friendly image. The flood of memes and online comments that has surrounded Will and Jada, on the other hand, is likely what sparked the reaction.
If he and Kanye were in Will Smith’s position, the conclusion would have been entirely different, according to the Roc-A-Fella co-founder. “I know if that was me and Kanye I would’ve walked out in cuffs and Kanye would’ve walked out in a straight jacket,” he said.
Dash went on to say that he didn’t believe it was real at first, which seems to be a popular reaction to the video. Because there were cops and a lot of security at the ceremony, Dash expected someone to be arrested. Despite this, Dash did not support Will Smith’s conduct.
