The Oscars were rocked by a physical fiasco between Will Smith and Chris Rock over the weekend. It overshadowed any news about the night’s winners. Following a joke regarding Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, Smith was spotted fleeing his chair and striking Rock across the face.
After the dust had settled, Smith issued a formal, public apology criticizing his own conduct. Members of Smith’s family are also commenting on the situation as the rest of the world watches. Carolyn Smith, the actor’s mother, and his younger sister, Ellen Smith, spoke with ABC6 Action News about their pride at his Best Actor triumph while also expressing their amazement at his behavior.
Carolyn also stated that an early morning Academy Awards text congratulating Will got the family group chat hopping ahead of the program. The Smith family then watched, along with the rest of the world, as Will’s temperament deteriorated and he assaulted Rock.
He is a very even, people person. And that’s the first time I’ve ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime… I’ve never seen him do that.
People regard the actor as an inspiration or goal, according to Sister Ellen Smith, but they truly don’t realize what it takes to get there.
Everybody kind of like, has been bullied and abused in some kind of way and I totally understand. I’ve had conversations with him, and it was like, it really kind of broke my heart listening to the things that he’s said he had to go through to get to where he is.
Will Smith and Chris Rock have not sorted it out yet, even though there are reports stating otherwise. In fact, they have not spoken since the slap either. Apparently, Chris was unaware that Jada had alopecia before he cracked the joke that triggered Will. Below is the video of the Smith family on the news.
