Chael Sonnen was facing a felony strangulation charge after a violent outburst in a Las Vegas hotel led him to assault several people. Sonnen was accused of beating several men and a woman after going into a rage inside the Four Seasons. Sonnen said he took a sleeping pill and blacked out before the incident.
The felony charge carried serious consequences. TMZ Sports has now reported that the retired MMA star had that charge dropped. The Clark County District Attorney’s office has declined to move forward with the felony prosecution.
Chael also had five other misdemeanor battery charges dropped. The DA’s office has not commented on the decision. Chael will still be facing five misdemeanor battery charges.
The December 18th incident was the latest in an ugly string of events in the MMA world. Cain Velasquez has been charged with attempted murder after shooting the wrong person while hunting down a man who allegedly molested a close relative. It has not been a good look for a sport that has always had a reputation problem.
Video of Chael Sonnen being removed from the scene by police went viral in the aftermath of the outburst. The legendary fighter will only be facing minor charges. Still, violence outside of the Octagon should never be condoned.
We will have to wait and see what comes next in the Chael Sonnen case. Chael’s next court hearing in the matter is scheduled for April 27, 2022. As the proceedings go on, a clearer picture of the circumstances that led to the assault will emerge.
