Aside from his music career, Akon is also a known entrepreneur. While busy with business ventures, the singer got involved with some legal matters in 2021. Even though initially settled, his former business partner wants more from the “Smack That” singer.
Devyne Stephens, a music executive is in the middle of a $4 million lawsuit accusing Akon of owing money on a previous settlement. Last month he asked a judge to freeze Akon’s assets.
In response, Akon claimed his former business partner filed the aforementioned motion “out of spite,” new Manhattan court papers revealed. Akon’s legal team elaborated in the documents that Stephens is doing this to “damage Akon’s reputation out of spite, while he is engaged in some of the most consequential and ambitious projects of his entrepreneurial career,”
The court documents also addressed a claim made by Stephens back in March compared the musician’s plans to build a futuristic city in Senegal to a Ponzi scheme. His claim cited the opinion of retired federal Special Agent Scot Thomasson.
Thomasson’s “supposed investigative expertise” are “nothing more than character assassination,” Akon claimed in the recent filing. The court papers alleged that Stephens’ accusations “have inflicted unwarranted damage on Akon.”
Akon has asked the judge to reject Stephens’ bid to freeze his assets. We will have to see how that turns out. Stephens has worked with the likes of Jay-Z, Destiny’s Child, Usher and Pink.
