Ed Sheeran has established himself as one of the most popular musicians in the modern era thanks to massive hits such as Shape Of You, Thinking Out Loud and more. He also has a very close relationship with music legend Sir Elton John.
The singer has also made a ton of money back in 2020 and it is highly likely he will make even more soon. Just like any other person, Ed Sheeran has a variety of interests outside of his own music.
Recently, Ed Sheeran successfully won the ‘Shape Of You’ plagiarism lawsuit. Ed Sheeran has also acted in minor roles and cameos in a variety of TV shows and films, such as Game Of Thrones and most recently, Red Notice.
Ed Sheeran took to Twitter and uploaded a video of himself, where he addressed the plagiarism lawsuit. He took the opportunity to blast baseless lawsuits, as they affect the songwriting industry.
“While I’m obviously happy with the result, I feel like claims like this are way too common now and have become a culture where a claim is made with the idea that a settlement will be cheaper than taking it to court, even if there is no basis for the claim.
That’s really damaging to the songwriting industry. There’s only so many notes and very few chords used in pop music. Coincidence is bound to happen if sixty thousand songs are being released every day on Spotify. That’s 22 million songs a year and there’s only 12 notes available.
I don’t want to take anything away from the pain and hurt suffered from both sides of this case, but I just want to say, I’m not an entity. I’m not a corporation. I’m a human being. I’m a father. I’m a husband. I’m a son. Lawsuits are not a pleasant experience and I hope that this mean in the future, baseless claims like this can be avoided. This really does have to end.”
Artists such as Lizzo, The Chainsmokers, and Dua Lipa have all fought against such accusations in the past. We certainly hope such accusations stop happening in the future.
