The Academy has taken the decision to ban Will Smith from the Oscars and any other Academy events for the next 10 years, starting from April 8, after the infamous slap. Now the Fresh Prince is reacting to this punishment.
“During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented,” Academy CEO Dawn Hudson and President David Rubin said in a joint statement following a committee meeting earlier today.
Just after a few hours, Will Smith responded to the Academy’s decision. “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” he told Entertainment Tonight.
“This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted,” the Academy, trying to justify their decision.
On the other hand, Chris Rock has refused to speak about the incident and also backed out from pressing charges against Will Smith. The Academy also addressed Chris Rock’s calm composure after being slapped at the 2022 Oscars. “We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters, and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.”
