Dwayne Haskins was tragically killed after being struck by a dump truck on a Florida highway earlier this week. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was just 24 years old. A flood of emotion overtook the NFL community as news of his passing spread.
Haskins was reported to have been dropping his daughter off at the airport. Haskins had joined several Steelers teammates in south Florida to train together. After leaving the airport, Dwayne got out of his car for an unknown reason. That is when he was fatally struck by the truck.
A man has told NBC 6 South Florida that he saw Dwayne Haskins walking the highway minutes before the accident. Chris Stanley was so concerned that he called 9-1-1. Stanley said he saw a tractor-trailer style vehicle veering into his lane from the right-hand side.
It was then that Stanley noticed Haskins, standing with his arms raised along the highway. The 9-1-1 call came as he was worried for Dwayne’s safety. The call from Chris Stanley to emergency officials came in at 6:31 AM. Moments later, Dwayne Haskins was dead.
Stanley did not see Dwayne Haskins’ vehicle parked along the road. He was unable to give any potential reason for why the football player was walking there in the first place. Chris called the situation “disturbing.”
The incident is still being investigated by authorities. Details so far have been scarce. Chris Stanley’s account is the most complete account we have of the scene thus far. There is still a lot more to learn about what exactly went down in the moments leading up to the tragedy.
