The sudden death of iconic comedian Gilbert Gottfried came as a huge shock. He was 67 when he passed away on Tuesday, April 12. His family revealed the cause of death in a statement.

Gottfried’s family confirmed the news referring to him as “the most iconic voice in the comedy” in a statement released on Tuesday afternoon. “We are heartbroken,” the statement read and simply shared that he’d died following a “long illness.”

Gottfried’s representative, Glenn Schwartz, has since shared that the comedian died of a heart abnormality called recurrent ventricular tachycardia, an arrhythmia caused by myotonic dystrophy Type 2.

Gottfried’s heart condition is a public knowledge for some time now. During the pandemic he canceled a series of live appearances in Montana because his doctors had reportedly advised to refrain from flying during the outbreak due to his weakened heart.
