Thandiwe Newton has won several awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award and a British Academy Film Award, as well as two Golden Globe nominations. She was reportedly fired from the new Magic Mike film after getting into a fight with her co-star. Now, Tatum’s representatives have called reports that she was fired after an argument about Smith’s behavior at the Oscars completely inaccurate.
Thandiwe Newton has denied reports that she was fired from the new Magic Mike film after an argument with co-star Channing Tatum about Will Smith. Newton stated that she left the film after 11 days of filming in London on her own accord. “Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
According to The Guardian, representatives for the actor called reports that she had been fired by Tatum, who is also a producer on the film, “completely inaccurate.” According to the report, Tatum and Newton had a falling out when discussing the incident at the Oscars last month in which Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage after a joke about his wife’s bald head was made.
According to a source, the disagreement was a “confrontation,” and Tatum stated, “I am not working with her anymore.” Newton’s role will be taken over by Salma Hayek. Magic Mike’s Last Dance marks Tatum’s return to the role of male stripper Mike Lane, as well as the return of the franchise’s original director, Steven Soderbergh, who left after the second film. The two films have grossed more than $300 million at the global box office. Magic Mike Live, a lucrative stage spin-off, has performed in Las Vegas, London, Berlin, and Australia.
Tatum told People magazine that he hoped the new film would be like “the Super Bowl of stripping,” with much higher-quality routines than had previously been seen. He also described the films as “very, very female-forward,” emphasizing the importance of a strong female lead for him.
“I want to have an equal, if not even more centralised female character for Mike to really play off of and almost to … I don’t want to say, [to have her] take the baton, but really let the movie be about a female’s experience and not Mike’s experience, because it has been so much about Mike and the guys’ experiences.”
Newton is currently starring in Amazon’s All the Old Knives alongside Chris Pine. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
