Mike Tyson made headlines yesterday after a video emerged of him repeatedly punching an airline passenger. It was noted that the passenger may have been intoxicated and was getting on Iron Mike’s nerves. Tyson eventually snapped, landing blow after blow and bloodying the man’s face.
It turns out this wasn’t just any run-of-the-mill passenger. TMZ reports that the man, Melvin Townsend, has had several encounters with police in the past. He has quite an impressive rap sheet.
Townsend has previously been convicted of several major crimes. These include fraud, grand theft, burglary, drug charges, and trafficking of stolen property. The 36-year-old is not your typical guy next door.
In 2018, Melvin Townsend broke onto a property and stole a trailer. He has been arrested for possession of Oxycodone without a prescription. Melvin has served about 35 total months in prison.
Mike Tyson’s representatives claim Townsend threw a water bottle at him after provoking him for several minutes. The former heavyweight champion of the world ended up making it to his destination after walking off the flight. Tyson partied with Ric Flair at a huge cannabis conference in Florida.
It sounds like Mike Tyson may have been justified in his beating of Melvin Townsend. So far, there have not been reports of criminal charges. That should help ease some who have been worried about the champ’s mental state.
