Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are presently in court after Depp filed a $50 million defamation claim against Heard in response to an op-ed she penned in the Washington Post in 2018 about her experiences with domestic abuse. It seems the entire internet is Team Johnny Depp.
While Heard did not specifically mention Depp in her article, Depp’s team claimed that it was about him and so cost him his job. Heard has since filed a counterclaim for damages in the amount of $100 million, which the jury will also consider. Both reject charges of sexual misconduct.
During Johnny Depp’s cross-examination in a Virginia courtroom, the lawyer directing the interrogation read another text Depp made about his ex-wife, Amber Heard: “Hopefully that c-nt’s rotting corpse is festering in the f-cking trunk of an honda civic.”
The trial’s livestream chat was quickly flooded with YouTube comments, with spectators giggling at the message. One of them said, “LOL Honda Civic.” The majority of the comments were either pro-Johnny Depp or aggressively anti-Amber Heard. Viewers repeated “Justice for Johnny Depp” and “Free Johnny.”
“I want to hug him and tell him everything will be okay,” one TikTok caption reads.
“He could have killed you, he had every right,” one viral TikTok says.
A reader called Heard a “crazy b-tch” and said, “Because she has a v-gina and Depp has a d-ck, the woman must be right. bElIEvE aLl wOmEN!”
Others called Heard as “manipulative, calculating, and quite possibly a con artist,” as well as “fake crying” in the courtroom and of looking “smug.” They poked fun at her hair and courtroom clothes, and call her “bipolar.”
Heard has been referred to as a “monster,” a “Karen,” “fake,” and “manipulative” in comments on the trial’s livestream. The matter is still ongoing, and a decision will most likely take many weeks. Many viewers, though, have already concluded that Depp is the true sufferer.
According to Farrah Khan, a gender justice campaigner, “it’s a circumstance that undermines how abuse really plays out.” It also has the potential to intimidate victims and survivors of abuse from speaking up, Khan told VICE News, because they fear reaction similar to what Heard is currently facing. This is a developing story so stay tuned for updates.
