Kenny Pickett is staying home. In a completely unexpected turn of events, University of Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett was selected with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The city went crazy when they found out.
Several videos have been getting tons of views and retweets across Twitter of fans in bars celebrating the pick. Local sports talk host Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan was one of Pickett’s biggest advocates. He also shared a clip of himself watching at home the moment Kenny became a Steeler.
The wild celebrations occurred all over the city. On Pitt’s campus in the Oakland neighborhood, rowdy students chanted Kenny Pickett’s name. On the city’s South Side, bar patrons showed up already wearing Kenny Pickett Steelers jerseys that they had custom-made before the team even drafted him.
Kenny Pickett was a Heisman Trophy finalist last season, leading the Panthers to an 11-2 record and their first ever ACC conference championship. The Steelers practice facility is located adjacent to Pitt’s on the city’s South Side. The selection was the feel good moment of day one of the draft.
Pickett broke several long-standing records in his legendary Pitt career. Many of those belonged to Hall of Famer Dan Marino, who the Steelers famously passed on in the 1983 NFL Draft. Pittsburgh did not want to make the same mistake twice after nearly 40 years of what if’s.
You can check out the fan reaction below. Pittsburgh has been described as a “football town with a drinking problem.” Judging by these clips, that statement seems accurate.
