Kim Kardashian turned plenty of heads at this year’s Met Gala. The skintight gown worn by the reality star to the event has a long history. It once belonged to Marilyn Monroe.
The dress was out on loan from Ripley’s Believe It or Not! At first, the museum did not want to give it to Kim Kardashian. Due to the age of the dress and how delicate the materials were, they told her to lose weight first.
TMZ reported that Kim lost sixteen pounds to be allowed to wear the iconic gown. After a fitting in March, Ripley’s denied Kardashian. Once Kim shed the extra weight, they gave her the green light.
The dress is most famous for being worn when Marilyn Monroe infamously sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy. The gown is encrusted with over 6,000 hand-sewn crystals. Kardashian was able to make the look her own.
The authentic dress was worn by Kim Kardashian for photo ops and to walk the red carpet at the Met Gala. She then changed into a replica to protect the historic artifact. The original was returned safely to Ripley’s.
Instead of a rental fee, Kim made two donations to organizations in the Orlando, Florida area on Ripley’s behalf. While it didn’t look like Kim would be able to rock Marilyn’s dress at first, things worked out. Kim also helped a couple of great causes along the way.
