Dave Chappelle was back on stage again just hours after being attacked at the Hollywood Bowl. During his performance, a man ran onto the stage with a fake gun with a knife attached and tried to bull-rush the controversial comedian. A large group of Chappelle’s friends warmed the attacker, breaking his arm and busting his face up pretty badly in the process.
Dave Chappelle praised Jamie Foxx, Busta Rhymes, and Jon Stewart for intervening and taking down the man who attacked him at the Hollywood Bowl, but we now know the famous comedian was joking. Carla Sims, Dave’s spokesperson, told TMZ immediately after the attack, Chappelle went back to standup mode, grabbing the mic and celebrating the beatdown.
He claimed Busta was assisting in stomping on the 23-year-old, who was armed with a replica gun and a real knife. Dave also summoned Jamie to the stage and thanked him for his participation. At the afterparty, Dave told the audience, “You know you’ve crossed the line when Jon Stewart gets in a few licks of his own.”
Now, Sims claimed Dave’s comments were simply part of his ever-evolving act, despite the fact that none of the three men threw a punch or otherwise participated in the takedown. Now Jamie, Jon, and Busta are probably grateful for the clarification.
It’s unclear if the attacker will file a lawsuit, claiming he was the victim of excessive force by people on stage, so clearing things up would protect them from potential legal action. The L.A. County D.A. will not charge Dave’s alleged attacker, Isaiah Lee, with a felony. The case has been referred to the city attorney for misdemeanor consideration.
