Charles Oliveira was scheduled to defend the UFC Lightweight title against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. However, Oliveira had unfortunate luck as he lost the title due to being half a pound over the 155-pound limit.

This certainly shocked fans and called into question UFC’s overly strict regulations when it came to making weight. Naturally, Oliveira was devasted to lose his title in such a way.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen talked bout Oliveira being stripped of the title due to not being able to make weight. Sonnen then explained how Oliveira suffered a loss of $2.3 million.

“I could probably come up with, right here in front of you, about $2.3 million that that scale fail cost him. Just so you understand how participation works for defending a championship. You must understand that word – defending a championship.

Sonnen estimated that it was safe to assume Oliveira’s pay-per-view revenue share from UFC 274 would have been around $1 million. Sponsorship money was also expected to be $50,000.

“So you’re talking about the exact same thing, just that sponsor money goes down. You’re looking at another 30 grand… but also the pay-per-view clause, you’re looking at another million bucks. Don’t forget the escalation that would go into his built-in show fee. Does not happen.

At UFC 274, Charles Oliveira defeated Justin Gaethje in the main event of the pay-per-view. He also reacted to Drake losing a ton of money by betting against him. We’ll have to see if Oliveira will get a chance to reclaim the title he never lost.
