Madonna has joined the NFT bandwagon, and she, like her pop music career, isn’t afraid to push the envelope. The musician collaborated with digital artist Beeple to create the NSFW “Mother of Creation” collection. It features a totally nude Material Girl giving birth to trees, butterflies, and other insects.
The “Mother of Creation” trio, according to Madonna, is designed to connect the ways people generate life with the ways people create art. Three minute-long movies of a digitized Madonna appear in the collection, with the aforementioned kinds of life emerging from her body.
I wanted to investigate the concept of creation, not only the way a child enters the world through a woman’s vagina, but also the way an artist gives birth to creativity.
“Mother of Nature,” the first NFT, displays a tree’s genesis in a frigid laboratory setting. The website for the token claims that it pushes against gravity and flowers bloom. The tree may sway or even break, but it continues to grow and reproduce.
Meanwhile, a swarm of butterflies appears in “Mother of Evolution,” which serves as a “a metaphor for the paradox that the world is burning down in a post-apocalyptic scene, but there is still evidence of life. We continue to give birth, no matter what destruction is going on, no matter what oppression we face. It relays the important message that if you are waiting for the world to be perfect or for your life to be perfect to create art, it will never happen. We have to do it, for our own survival in this chaotic, unpredictable world.”
Synthetic centipedes crawl out of Madonna while she sleeps in a jungle in the last piece, “Mother of Technology.” Science may also give light into the world, according to a statement, but only if employed with the appropriate consciousness. The centipede portrays technology as both a source of life and a source of harm, a contrast of dark and light.
This digital art is a bit unsettling, and it requires you to take in a lot at once. That being said, it does assist some worthy causes. The Voices of Children Foundation, which supports women and children affected by the war in Ukraine, The City of Joy, a leadership community for women survivors of violence in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and Black Mama’s Bail Out, which provides bail money for Black mothers and caregivers who are disproportionately incarcerated, will benefit from the proceeds of the tokens. Those NFTs are are currently up for auction. At your own risk, check out the “Mother of Creation” NFTs here.
