Kendrick Lamar dropped his new record last night. The highly anticipated “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” came along with some huge personal revelations. Kendrick is known for speaking his mind through his music, and his latest release was no exception.
On the track “Mother | Sober,” Lamar opens up about several personal struggles. Kendrick Lamar spits bars about how although he stayed sober, sex was his true addiction. Kendrick also alluded to occasions where he cheated on his long-time partner, Whitney Alford.
“I was never high, I was never drunk, never out my mind/I need control, they handed me some smoke, but still I declined/I did it sober, sittin’ with myself, I went through all emotions/No dependents — except for one, let me bring you closer.
Intoxicated, there’s a lustful nature that I failed to mention/Insecurities that I project, sleepin’ with other women/Whitney’s hurt, the pure soul I know, I found her in the kitchen/Askin’ God, ‘Where did I lose myself? And can it be forgiven?’”
The extremely reflective track shows Kendrick Lamar at his most vulnerable. It is rare to see insecurities put on display like that in the rap world. Kendrick has no problems showing his imperfections to his fans.
Kendrick has released plenty of introspective songs in the past. This one might be the most personal. You can check out Kendrick’s latest track below.
