Regan Gibbs was a star on the pitch for the Kansas Jayhawks. The collegiate goalkeeper was just getting started with her life’s work when she was tragically killed. Police have now arrested her husband in connection with her passing.
The Lawrence Police Department in Kansas was called to Gibbs’ apartment on Monday evening. There, they found Regan’s 26-year-old husband, Chad Marek, and Gibbs, who was mortally wounded. Sadly, she was declared dead at the scene.
TMZ reports that Marek was arrested for murder a short time after the Regan Gibbs was found. Domestic violence is being investigated as a contributing factor in her death. Regan was only 25-years-old.
Kansas women’s soccer coach Mark Francis issued a statement through the school. Francis said the soccer program is heartbroken to hear the news. The entire KU family is sending their support to her friends, family, and loved ones.
“Our soccer program is heartbroken to hear about the tragic loss of Regan. She was a tremendous teammate and young woman, and touched so many during her time at Kansas. Regan will always be remembered for the impact she had both on and off the field. We share our condolences to her family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
Regan Gibbs played for the Jayhawks from 2015 to 2018. In her first year, she set the record for the lowest goals-against average by a first-year keeper in program history. She also played in two NCAA tournaments. Everyone here at Thirsty sends our thoughts out to those affected by this tragic loss.
