Will Smith took home the Oscar for best actor and best slap at this year’s Oscar Awards. The consequences of his actions are still being felt. While other Smith projects were put on hold following the Oscars, Sony Chairman Tom Rothman stated that “Bad Boys 4” is still in the works.
Sony Chairman Tom Rothman provided an update on “Bad Boys 4,” claiming that the picture is still in development and will star Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, contradicting previous rumors. Following the success of the third instalment, “Bad Boys for Life,” the first film in the franchise without filmmaker Michael Bay, the fourth instalment was announced in 2020. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directed “Bad Boys 3.”
Rumors in April 2022 suggested that “Bad Boys 4” was on hold as a result of Smith’s attack on Chris Rock at the Oscars. Before the Oscars, Smith reportedly received 40 pages of a “Bad Boys 4” script. Sony chairman Rothman told Deadline that Smith’s role in the sequel was not put on hold.
No. That was inaccurate. That movie’s been in development and still is. There weren’t any brakes to pump because the car wasn’t moving. That was a very unfortunate thing that happened, and I don’t think it’s really my place to comment, except to say that I’ve known Will Smith for many years, and I know him to be a good person. That was an example of a very good person having a very bad moment, in front of the world. I believe his apology and regret is genuine, and I believe in forgiveness and redemption.
Following the now-famous slap, a number of Smith-led projects were delayed, including the Netflix action picture “Fast and Loose” and “Bright 2.” “Emancipation,” an AppleTV+ film, has also been pushed later to provide more of a buffer from the Academy Awards drama. It makes sense that Bad Boys 4 is still in the works. If anything, Will Smith proved himself to be a bad boy by slapping Chris Rock.
