Saweetie was offered a guest lecturer position at her alma mater, the University of Southern California, at the end of 2021. She was contacted to teach a business Venture Feasibility and Venture Initiation (VFVI) course at the USC Marshall School of Business. Now, the chart-topper is bringing those skills to young people who can’t afford a $65,000 education at a prestigious institution.
The “Icy Girl” and her grandmother, Roxanne Glass, created the Icy Baby Foundation earlier this year. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, the two wanted to give back to POC kids through philanthropic outreach, creating programming centered on teaching others how to “level up.” According to GLAMOUR, a financial literacy initiative for underserved youngsters is being launched by the charity.
The reason why I’m so sensitive to that is because I need help my damn self. Just putting money in the savings account is not enough – especially not enough to create generational wealth for you, your family, or your kids. It’s important that we educate these young kids so that it’s something that’s instilled into their minds, so it’s not something that they’re trying to figure out as an adult.
Saweetie also discussed why she chose to work with her grandmother over other NGOs. The rapper explained that she was weary of giving away a lot of money to other foundations, without knowing what they did with the money. The rapper further stated that she trusts her grandmother.
As a kid, I watched my grandma give back, I watched her go to high schools, I watched her go to other churches, I watched her go to other people’s homes, praying for them, giving to them. Uplifting those who look like me has been important all of my life since I was a little girl. Because I would be right there next to my grandma helping other people.
Roxanne Glass, her grandmother, was a former Miss Black Nebraska. She gave back to the community as a crown winner and as a community stakeholder. Check out her complete interview with GLAMOUR below.
