Jeff Bridges is noted for his versatility and has garnered several awards over his career that has spanned seven decades. Bridges announced on October 19th, 2020, that he was diagnosed with lymphoma and had gone through chemotherapy. Recently, Jeff shared that he was ‘close to dying’ after contracting COVID-19 while on chemotherapy.
According to People, Jeff Bridges said that he was “pretty close to dying” after catching COVID while on chemotherapy for cancer. The Oscar winner revealed that he had lymphoma. Bridges revealed that he was suffering from a “12-by-9-inch tumor” in his body. “It was like a child in my body. It didn’t hurt or anything,” the actor explained.
Bridges began chemotherapy via infusion and then oral chemotherapy almost immediately to fight cancer. Prior to the COVID diagnosis, the treatment proved successful. “They got a cocktail that worked, and oh man it worked fast,” Bridges said. “That thing just imploded.”
Bridges’ health took a turn for the worse in January 2021 when he got COVID. Bridges’ body had no fight against the coronavirus since his chemotherapy treatments had severely weakened his immune system.
“I had no defenses. That’s what chemo does — it strips you of all your immune system. I had nothing to fight it. COVID made my cancer look like nothing.”
Bridges was hospitalized for five months as a result of his COVID battle. The actor said that he couldn’t move over in bed without the assistance of a nurse and an oxygen tank.
“I was pretty close to dying. The doctors kept telling me, ‘Jeff, you’ve got to fight. You’re not fighting.’ I was in surrender mode. I was ready to go. I was dancing with my mortality.”
Bridges overcame cancer and is now in remission. The actor’s People magazine cover starts off his press tour for the FX crime series “The Old Man.” Bridges appear as Dan Chase, a former CIA operative who has spent decades living off the grid in hiding from his previous agency.
The program is based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 thriller novel of the same name. When an assassination attempt forces him out of hiding, Chase finds himself on the run from Harold Harper (John Lithgow), the FBI’s associate director for counterintelligence with whom he has a tangled relationship.
Jeff is a legend who fought for his life and overcame cancer and covid. Let’s hope he stays healthy. “The Old Man” will be released on June 16th. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
