Nicknames can make or break someone, but it’s also a very serious issue when it comes to nailing down the rights to that name. Jake Hager revealed on Frank Thomas has threatened to sue him for $5 Million over his ‘Big Hurt’ nickname.
Chris Jericho invited his Jericho Appreciation society on the latest episode of his podcast, Talk Is Jericho to discuss the formation of the group. The highlight of the episode was when Hager said Frank Thomas had threatened to sue him after Hager posted a photo of himself wearing a jersey that said ‘Big Hurt’ on the back.
Matt Menard, who was also present in the episode, began by saying, “I used the name ‘Big Magic’ before. I remember you said, ‘I don’t want to use big,’ because you wanted to use ‘big’ for something else.”
To this Jericho replied, “Big Hurt. You’re not big. [Hager] is big. He’s the big guy in the group.” It was then Menard who asked, “Wait, Frank Thomas sued you?”
Hager the admitted that, “Your dad [Jericho’s dad] gave us the jerseys, New York Rangers, and it had ‘Big Hurt’ on the back of it. I posted a caption on [Instagram] with the caption ‘Big Hurt.’ Chris texted me and said, ‘I like this.’ I said, ‘Thanks, can you help me get it over?’ Next thing you know, we’re getting sued by Frank Thomas for $5 million. It was a threat to sue for $5 million. We hadn’t done any merchandise, we had just talked about it. We even said, ‘Why don’t you come on Dynamite and wrestle me for it?'”
Chris Jericho then joked, “You’re a baseball player, you’re not hurting anybody. Frank Thomas, go fuck yourself.” Hager has apparently deleted the photo that he once posted on Instagram wearing the jersey with Thomas’ nickname behind it.
To be fair, Thomas did go as The Big Hurt on the baseball field decades ago. He also uses that same nickname in his present day endeavors. Obviously, he’s not willing to share.
