A stampede took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn recently. The stampede happened after rumors began to spread that there was an active shooter inside the arena. Naturally, this led to mass hysteria and utter panic, leading to the stampede.
According to TMZ, at least 10 people suffered injuries right after midnight on Sunday. At that time, many people began screaming that there was a shooter on the loose. That was not really true, but people were not aware of that.
It is not known how the rumor started but it spread almost instantly. A security guard said the rumor was that someone was firing shots outside the arena. This led to people who were leaving the boxing match to run for their lives.
Naomi Osaka was among those present, as she tweeted, that she heard “shouting and saw people running” and was then told “there was an active shooter and we had to huddle in a room and close the doors,” adding, she was “petrified.”
The 10 people who were injured were transported to a hospital and according to officials, they suffered only minor injuries and nothing serious. With the Uvalde shooting still fresh in the minds of people, a stampede like this was not unexpected.
